Boating Accident Statistics, Causes, & Legal Implications
The U.S. Coast Guard recently released their findings for 2014 boating accidents. There were a total of 4,064 accidents that resulted in 610 fatalities and 2,678 injuries. These numbers, unfortunately, show a 10% increase in the rate of fatalities per 100,000 boating vehicles and a 9% increase in deaths overall.
The Coast Guard reported the top five causes for boating accidents, which are:
- Distracted pilot
- Improper lookout
- Inexperienced driver at the helm
- Excessive speed
- Substance usage (alcohol)
The Coast Guard reports that of these causes, alcohol is the most prevalent. Where the cause of the accident was known, alcohol was present 20% of the time.
