Charter buses, also known as motorcoaches, are tall buses employed for cross-country travel and tourism-related activities. While bus industry experts assert that buses are a safe mode of transportation, charter buses have come under fire due to recent tragedies. In 2007, a charter bus crash killed five baseball players from Bluffton University, eventually resulting in new legislation requiring seat belts and other safety measures.
The review of the accident found that the primary cause of the crash was “driver error” and poor signage. However, poor safety equipment was a factor in the deaths of the passengers as well. While the new law will make sure new charter buses are safer, existing buses are for the most part allowed to remain on the road without any changes.
The Michigan study noted that a third of all charter bus crash fatalities were the deaths of passengers and drivers. This is a far cry from the normal rate of less than 5-10% for school or transit bus passengers. For bus passengers in general, riding a charter bus is more likely to result in serious injury or death.
