Two tractor-trailers collided on Interstate 75 in Tennessee on Aug. 27 at around 3:15 p.m. The site of the accident was near Caryville in Campbell County. Tennessee Highway Patrol stated that a northbound semi crossed the median and crashed head-on into a southbound rig.
All lanes of the interstate in both directions were closed following the incident. At first, it was thought that radioactive materials were aboard one of the trucks, but it was later shown to be untrue. One truck was carrying oxidizing materials, and the other was hauling batteries. A half-mile radius surrounding the site was evacuated due to a chemical fire. It was lifted at 6:30 p.m., some lanes reopened at 7:30 p.m. and the site was cleared of debris around 2 a.m.
THP reported that a passenger vehicle was involved in the wreck along with the two trucks. Superior Battery Manufacturing confirmed that the driver of their truck was killed in the accident. Five persons were injured and flown to the University of Tennessee Medical Center, including two firefighters who were injured while fighting the blaze, according to Campbell County authorities.
When the investigation into the cause of this wreck is concluded, it may be determined that the deceased driver was liable for the accident and the injuries. If truck driver negligence caused the 18-wheeler to cross over into the oncoming lane, the injured parties may choose to file a personal injury claim against the deceased driver's estate or the battery company that employed the driver.
