A tour bus operated by Teague VIP Express overturned midday Wednesday, November 14th, 2018. The bus accident caused two fatalities and at least 44 injuries, with three people reportedly in critical condition. According to initial reports, the bus driver lost control of the vehicle after hitting an icy patch of road near the I-269 and I-22 connection in northern Mississippi, just south of Memphis, Tennessee.
Earlier in the day, a wintry storm fell over the entire region. The snow and ice was dangerous enough to prompt the closing of several schools and public forums. It is not known at this time the speed of the tour bus when the driver lost control, or if the bus driver had any past experience driving across ice and sleet.
Both the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have noted they will likely not investigate the bus crash. Neither agency participates in investigations when it appears that operator negligence was the cause, rather than a specific defect with the vehicle or an unsafe traffic rule. The omission of these organizations’ investigations could be an initial indicator of the liability in the fatal tour bus accident.
