What Are Jackknife & Rollover Accidents?
Jackknife accidents occur when a truck’s brakes fail or lock, causing the wheels to skid. Skidding causes the trailer to move faster than the truck, causing it to swing out at a perpendicular angle. Cars caught in this angle will collide with the truck’s trailer, often at high speeds. The odds of jackknifing can increase in poor weather, but jackknifing often involves driver error, poor maintenance, or badly distributed loads.
Rollovers are a result of sudden veering, combined with heavier loads and short wheelbase length. When a driver maneuvers poorly, the tires can catch on the surface of the road. This essentially “trips” the truck, causing it to roll. The fatality rate for these collisions is also very high, at 50% for almost all truck types.
Top Causes of Jackknife & Rollover Accidents
Among all the causes of jackknife accidents, four stand out as the most common.
- Equipment Failure: A variety of anti-jackknife devices are employed on commercial motor vehicles (CMVs), such as electronic brakeforce distribution and trailer brake levers within the cab. If any of these systems fail, jackknife can ensue.
- Brake Failure: Brakes that have not been properly maintained and inspected can fail, increasing the likelihood of a jackknife or rollover incident.
- Adverse Weather Conditions: Poor weather that causes icy and wet roads can increase the chances of a jackknife.
- Improperly Loaded Vehicles: Unsecured cargo can shift during operation. Sudden braking, for example, can cause a weight distribution imbalance that leads to jackknife or rollover.
